Statics and Friction : Introduction

 

This section is mostly review as all of you taking Solid Mechanics I have experience with static equilibrium analysis in your first year Mechanics course. Majority of problems in Solid Mechanics I involve 2D rigid body equilibrium analysis, with the addition of stress and strain concept

 

You will be working with pin, fixed, and roller supports

 

 

Types of Deformation

 

Tension – Object is being stretched, length of the object increases

 

Compression – Object is being pressed in, length of the object decreases

 

Torsion – Object is being twisted by applied moment, rarely involved in problem solving questions

 

Bending – Object forms a “parabolic” shape due to the applied force at the far end of the support
